Vienna Waits for You...

'You know that when the truth be told, you can get what you want, or you can just get old...Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true. When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?'
(Billy Joel)

My family is Austrian/German. I'm going to go there one day, hopefully with my kids. And see the architecture, the castles, the opera houses, the museums...

I can't wait.

Did you know that Granny was born in Poland? That is what her birth certificate says. J and I looked at it the other day.
I think Jacob Daum was born in Austria, but I am not 100% sure.
Either way, Austria, Germany & Poland are cool places to visit. Dream on..... and dreams do come true.

Nope, I did not know that. I always thot Granny immigrated from Austria to Winnepeg. Daum is the actual father of Dad, right? Helem was the second husband of Granny, wasn't he? Man, when you include Tom Luckett, Granny had a lot of husbands for her day!

I'm not much on family history (But then I didn't know Uncle Bobby had died recently either!)

Yes, Jacob Daum was Dad's Dad. Paul Helem was Granny's second husband (I think). I am not sure how the half sister (Aunty Lily) fits in the picture (maybe Paul Helem was number #3 - ????).
Granny lived in Austria (from what I remember), but it was a strange time. Borders were changing with political/economic upheaval, non-stable governments, and the rise of the Nazis. I guess that is why she moved to Winnipeg. Or, at least that is the way I see it….

I think Auntie Lily was Granny's love child - Dad's 1/2 sister. (What the heck was Auntie Mannie then? Auntie Lily's sister, but Granny wasn't the mother was she???) Did Auntie Mannie raise Auntie Lily?

All I can remember is the red swirly hallway carpet in their old apartment, the ancient smell of the place and pining over their music boxes!
